Viola da Gamba

Mary has a 3 different viols or viola da gambas.
  • treble viol
  • bass viol
  • Renaissance bass viol
Viols are often heard played in consort together or with other historic instruments, but they also suit solo music and are perfect for folk too.

The treble viol is a LuMi Master bought from the Early Music Shop.
Mary's bass viol was made by Merion Attwood after a Barak Norman of 1696. It has the most beautiful inlay work on the fingerboard and tailpiece. The bows are both by Landwehr, also from the Early Music Shop.
The two instruments can be heard together in the Chaconne by Robert de Visee.

Mary fell in love with the gutsy sound of Renaissance viols a few years ago, and when she was invited to join Piva Renaissance Collective it was the perfect excuse to commission one of her own.
The Renaissance bass viol is made by Matthew Farley after a Ciciliano of c.1580. and the bow is by Coen Engelhard
